PRP treatment, have you heard of it? PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, and it is a therapy used to promote healing. The treatment involves injecting a patient’s own platelets back into an area needing regeneration. This form of regenerative therapy was first developed in the 1970s and used in open-heart surgery in the late 1980s. PRP treatment has come a long way since then, and at CALIBRE Clinics, we have found it to be successful as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
CALIBRE is a specialist penis augmentation and erectile dysfunction treatment clinic, led by Dr Jayson Oates, a renowned facial plastic and ENT surgeon. Dr Oates draws on his 20-years of experience to personally train all doctors at CALIBRE on how to treat erectile dysfunction with CALIBRE’s renowned treatment options. Here’s more detail on our PRP procedure and why it may be an option for you.
What are plasma and platelets?
Plasma is the liquid part of your blood, the largest component of your blood, and it consists of mostly proteins and water. Our plasma is responsible for circulating proteins, nutrients, hormones and vitamins around the body, whilst removing waste products. The proteins found in plasma promote cell growth and repair. Platelets are tiny, colourless blood cells, and they help form clots in the body to stop bleeding.
What is PRP used for?
- Joint pain
- Healing muscles and ligaments
- Treating torn tendons or injuries; tennis elbow, jumper’s knee and Achilles tendonitis
- Repairing tissue
- Hair loss
- Pulled hamstring
- Knee sprains
- Osteoarthritis
- Peyronie’s disease
- Erectile dysfunction
- Orgasm enhancement
How does PRP work for erectile dysfunction?
PRP works by removing the plasma from the blood and concentrating it. First, we take a few samples of the patient’s blood and then run them through a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the blood into its different layers i.e. red blood cells at the bottom and then the plasma containing the platelets at the top. The plasma and platelets are then transferred into syringes, ready for injection. Whilst your blood is being processed, a numbing cream is applied—so you and your penis don’t feel a thing! Then, we inject your unique Platelet Rich Plasma solution into the areas that affect penile blood flow the most, which usually takes no more than 10 minutes. PRP therapy essentially harnesses the body’s ability to amplify and stimulate its numerous reparative cells to heal the penile tissue.
Benefits of PRP
PRP therapy is a popular treatment as it reduces the need for anti-inflammatory medication or strong opioid use for the conditions listed above. We collect the PRP from your blood, so your body can’t have an allergic reaction to or reject the treatment. It is effective for improving the sexual health of men, thanks to the variety of repairing abilities, such as stem cells and nutrients increasing overall blood flow to the penis.
What does an erection require?
When the brain sends arousal messages to the penis, the arteries widen to increase blood flow. The ability to achieve an erection is thanks to the spongy tissue inside the two chambers of the penis (corpora cavernosa). This penile tissue needs to fill with blood to grow, to maintain an erection. Blood vessel function and healthy erectile tissue are vital for blood to flow to and engorge the penis.
What does PRP do for erectile dysfunction?
The PRP procedure triggers the repair and regeneration of the penile tissue. One of the causes of erectile dysfunction is inevitable because aging is natural. As we get older, the tissue and vessel elasticity all over the body starts to deteriorate, and the same thing happens to the penis. Deterioration in elasticity reduces blood circulation to the penis, which we know is essential to achieving an erection hard enough for sexual intercourse. PRP rejuvenates the deteriorated tissue from ageing or underlying health conditions and promotes healthy erectile function.
What is the post-treatment like for PRP?
You may experience some mild bruising, swelling or redness around the injection site for a few days. Most of our patients experience swelling for 48-hours, which reduces once the excess fluid from the PRP treatment begins to reabsorb into the body. To decrease the chance of bruising, we advise you avoid Neurofen, blood-thinning medications and fish oils in the week leading up to your treatment. You must take extra care to keep the area clean the week following your treatment, and for the next three days after your treatment, you should refrain from sexual activities and strenuous exercise.
How many PRP treatments will you require
The number of PRP treatments you require to see a difference depends on the severity of your erectile dysfunction. Most of our patients see results between 1 and 3 treatment sessions, followed by an annual appointment to extend the treatment results.
